Simply Soldered at Moxie Beads
July 23, 2013
This past weekend I attended what I would like to call a
little jewelry making continuing education class. And while it wasn’t at the
GIA it was at the quaint little Moxie Beads located on the north end of Main
Street in Santa Monica. I could go on about Moxies extremely friendly and very
knowledgeable staff, but I will save my wordy praise of customer service for a
later dated yelp review.
Basic Soldering 101 was the class and Christy was the
fabulous instructor. Christy started us off with some soldering basics from
familiarizing ourselves with our work station, basic safety, getting to know
the tools we were to be working with and lastly the process. Since I mainly
work with wire wrapping and rings are my specialty I was super excited about
gaining the knowledge behind the joining of two metals. The class focused on
working with sterling silver and we began with getting the soldering technique
down, this was perfect because we had ample time to practice practice practice,
make mistakes, ask questions and then try again. We did this by practicing on
closing jump rings and while I don’t anticipate myself using my skills to make
jump rings in the future this was a great place to hone in on the art.
After we worked on
that for a bit Christy taught us to make our own toggle clasp, but also left us
to our own devices to get creative. I decided to work more on rings. From
cleaning, pickling, soldering, pickling again and then shaping I worked on a
variety of mini stackables.
If you follow me on IG you have already had a chance to
check out my brief workshop video, but if not you can enjoy below.
If you are interested in possibly taking up a new hobby and have a love for jewelry, I suggested looking into the classes that Moxie Beads offer. They are affordable, informative and come with 2 extra hours of in store bench time to return and practice more of what you learned! This place truly has something to offer everyone. I left Moxie Beads with my very own soldering kit which they
conveniently packaged for our option to buy and I couldn’t be more excited to
set up my very own work station at home and get to work on some fun creations
of my own!
Phalanx Rings: Midi Rings
February 18, 2013
Who would have imagined that rings would be working their way up the finger? Worn above the knuckle, often sitting just above the joint, the barely-there dainty phalanx ring (also known as the midi ring) can be blatantly characterized as a ring that is too small to fit your whole finger so you just wear it above your knuckle and call it a happy accident!
Spotted on edgy stars such as Rihanna, these delicate baubles look best when they are subtle and thin. You can stack then a top fingers with other rings, or stack multiples on a single finger all without feeling heavy handed.
I, for one, am in love with this jewelry trend and definitely think you should try it out for size! I'm always excited to come across a trend that offers a fresh new look to your jewelry, especially a modernized way to wear rings. Something about wearing rings this way feels romantic, edgy and a bit mysterious all at the same time, like you have stories to tell and secrets to keep... check out some of my favorite must have midi rings below!

Obsession du Jour: The Egyptian Knuckle Ring!
September 28, 2010
Knuckle Rings! Not to be mistaken for last weeks knuckle duster/brass knuckle post! Found in vertical or horizontal styles, knuckle rings are an exciting and popular way to wear a ring. Made with sterling silver & or gold/vermeil & normally very large these rings can be found worn horizontal & covering part of the knuckle or worn vertically to wear over several fingers- Whatever it may be these rings will ALWAYS make a statement about the wearer really without saying a WORD shhh! You know how much I like that! I am so all about the goodies Planet Blue has to offer and 1 thing for sure is they have no shortage when it comes to offering a range of these rings! Check it out for yourself! Shop Planet Blue Knuckle Rings
You can totally make wearing a knuckle ring your own trend as they can be worn on any finger or multiple fingers; there simply are no rules to commit to (which I am ABSOLUTELY a fan of) as to where a knuckle ring can be worn... Make it own!

Cabochons GALORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 26, 2010
I have to say a new find that I absolutely cant wait to work with are these AMAZING vintage cabochons! I have yet to put them to work in any of the pieces I have made so far so for me they happened to be a "new find" even-though cabochons are among the oldest types of gemstones. In gem speak terms a cabochon is a stone that is cut to have a highly polished almost always rounded top with no faceting, with a flat but sometimes slightly domed base. You are most likely to find certain stones such as opal, turquoise, onyx, moonstone, and star sapphire almost always cut "en cabochon."
An absolute fav of mine, as well as one of the more popular shapes is the oval cut cabochons. Technically, cabochons are not really "cut" but they are actually shaped and then polished making it much simpler to produce a cabochon than it is to cut a faceted gem with many faces. Faceting within itself is an art-form, but before the art of faceting was developed, most all gemstones were produced as cabochons.
Im not so sure if Im mesmerized by how great they look together in this pic as much as I am excited to actually make something out of them... I will update shortly but I have also included some other fabulous finds among the cabochons family ...
