Tic-Tock: Goes the Pocket Watch

March 21, 2011

Lets mix it up a little; take it off the wrist and lets put in a pocket, back in the pocket that is! But make sure you’re working with the right one… I’m referring to the pocket watch! Pocket watches are historically the first type of watch to hit the scene; they were here long before the wrist watch and have evolved with the times. Typically the pocket watch can be found on a chain, intended to be carried in the pocket of a jacket or vest. Wrist watches didn’t really become popular until the 1920’s, but before they gained their popularity they were known to be strictly for women. It has been said that men during this time would rather step into a skirt than be seen wearing a wrist watch; but, boy have times changed! The pocket watch could often be found at the end of a chain, think train conductor. This chain was also found overly decorated and adorned “ostensibly” with practical accessories such as a winding key, vesta case or a cigar cutter . While these early age pocket watches were typically found with only an hour hand, time pieces today are found with all sorts of additional time-related features such as timerschronographs, and alarm functions, calendar days, days of week, year or sub-second units like 1/10 or 1/100 of a second. And some even more modern designs go as far as using GPS technology or heart-rate monitoring capabilities… Oh watch out now!
